Suicide bomber kills 16 in western Afghanistan

From The Telegraph
A suicide bomber killed 16 people in the city of Farah and a powerful politician survived an assassination attempt in a bloody day in Afghanistan.
A day after President Hamid Karzai took the oath of office for a second term, a suicide bomber struck in a busy square in Farah,
Police shouted "Stop! Stop!" at the bomber as he drove a motorcycle towards the provincial governor's compound. He then blew himself up just 50 yeards from the building.
Later, Abdul Rasul Sayyaf, a former warlord and Northern Alliance leader, was in a convoy with his bodyguards when a remote-controlled bomb hidden in an irrigation canal beside the road exploded in the Paghman district north of Kabul.
One car in the convoy was destroyed and five of Mr Sayyaf's bodyguards were killed. Mr Sayyaf was not injured.
Mr Sayyaf was close to the Northern Alliance leader Ahmed Shah Masood who was assassinated by al-Qaeda and whose forces, backed by the US, marched on Kabul in the push to oust the Taliban regime after the September 11 attacks.
