A Muslim woman is suing the owner of local Golden Corral restaurants in Hammond federal court, claiming the owner harassed, humiliated and fired her from the Schererville restaurant after she refused to remove her religiously mandated head scarf.
Nahida Ashkar claims Samuel Gibson was hostile when he first saw Ashkar wearing a head scarf and tunic at his restaurant. Gibson asked her to remove the scarf or cover it with a hat and roll up her tunic's sleeves, even though Ashkar told Gibson her religion forbids those changes, according to the suit.
Ashkar sued Gibson in Lake County court in September 2008, but Gibson's defense lawyer has filed papers to move the case into federal court. A federal judge will rule on jurisdiction.
