Contemporary Art and Reviving Civilisation

by David Hamilton (December 2009)

The first thing that strikes one about contemporary artists is their general pettiness. Classical art provided something to aspire to not something to reduce.  The problem with contemporary artists is that they do not know what subjects to paint - have no conception of what is an artistic subject. They offer well-painted trivia.  Art became about the artist as celebrity, not about beauty; angst or social issues became "art" and now the mission is to merge it with pornography. The health of a civilisation is shown in its art. The comparison of some examples of contemporary art and the wholesome products of the dawn of European civilisation guides us in how we can revive this decaying inheritance of ours. more>>>

stumbled on this article whilst writing an essay for art course. I am currently on an art foundationa dn am applying for fine art degree's. just to say thankyou

found this very inspiring. struggling with it all at the moment, art has to be a refelction of society , it has to communicate with the now, but i get that even tough the world is all a bit of a mess it too can be positive and contructive as opposed to the self indulgent act of a troubled mind. I really want to study degree in london, i really want to be in the center of it all, but finidng it hard to have conviction in my work. Finding this article just came at a brilliant time, must be a god thing. well i think so.

Are saying I should watch Scruton's programme or I need to? I did and enjoyed it but thought while he made several interesting points it was  too idealist kept drifting out of reality into a platonic realm. Incidentally,  I wrote that article independently.
