John Derbyshire reminds us of the greater (and more long term) realities of science and Western civilization in the wake of climategate.

"And the science is heavily polluted by politics. The climate-change legions are recruited mainly from the Western Left-intelligentsia, their kitbags stuffed with all the sub-Marxist and ethno-masochist flapdoodle of the modern academy. They hate capitalism, they hate Western civilization, and they hate their own ancestors. The kind of dramatic social engineering implicit in the phrase “combating climate change” is emotionally appealing to them."
Look at the illogic here. "The science is polluted by politics." Why? Because:

We are to look, apparently, at the wilder shores of the craziest "environmentalists" -- the ones who live mainly in California, or who show up to riot in Paris or Geneva or Milan at some meeting of ministers of the WTO -- and from that to work backwards, and accept the notion tha the tens of thousands of the scientists who try to figure out the best way to collect data, and to make sense of data collected, most imperfectly and irregularly, in the past, and to blame them for the greed of Al Gore (with his $100 million that only provides fodder for critics -- if he wants to Save The Planet, he should give away all of that money, so as to prevent Al Gore Becoming The Issue in this country), or for the handful of people at a university in England who could not contain their contempt, or for the assorted dreamy souls who put nails in trees (often killing them), in order to "save them from the lumber companies."
Where is the evidence that the scientists working in this area are "heavily polluted by politics"? -- and "left-wing politics" at that?. Anyone familiar with academic life knows that it is the Departments of Science that are the redoubts of, if not Republicans, at least those who might vote for those who do not consign all Republicans to the outer darkness. A week, or a month, spent reading the literature, or going to meetings (the National Academy of Sciences has a nice building in Woods Hole, perfect for a summer visit), might disabuse Derbyshire of these notions, ones that I suspect he really doesn't have, but perhaps he feels, in "standing up for science" (whatever that means) at The Corner, given the company he keeps, he's got to throw them a bone, not realizing it would turn out to be a bone of contention, and that in that subsequent contention, his words would not withstand scrutiny.
One more thing. Through a variety of accidents, I know some of the best-known scientists involved in this research. And what surprised me was to discover how, along with climate change, many of them -- especially those who live in Western Europe or have frequent contact with those in Western Europe -- are horrified by what they see as the islamization of that part of the West. Are they really so "left-wing" and so interested in "dramatic social engineering" ?
Even if one did not believe that global warming today were caused by man, if one worried about Islam, would it not make sense to join forces with those who do so believe, in order to make sure that Muslim oil revenues -- the source of the Money Weapon that pays for mosques, madrasas, campaigns of Da'wa, armies of Western hirelings to defend and protect and promote Islam -- are constantly diminished?
