Stumble like a Parisian

A UCLA grad observes:

4. French people love American music but do not know how to dance to it. Even the black French people need some help in the dancing department.

Not to give the French a break, but most people of whatever demographic background can't follow a beat with their feet.  Hence, the large quantities of alcohol and drugs consumed at wee-hours clubs: they might still be unable to dance—even less able—but nobody is sober enough to notice.

I think it's because they are so comfortable in their own skin. It's infectious too. English people and other inhibited races dance better when surrounded by South Americans.

How easily I forget the other hemisphere. As a people, the Brazilians got the beat. And nothing compares with the elite Argentine tangoists. My favorite dance scene? Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed dancing their way backwards into a pool in It's a Wonderful Life.

Perhaps they are too self-conscious. I've often thought that the kind of chic that the French go in for is incompatible with letting go and enjoying yourself.

That said, the English aren't great dancers either, especially the men, because we drink too much. In South America - what I've seen of it - it seems that everyone can dance, and everyone, young and old, fat and thin, looks fabulous.
